GIA Introduction to Sapphires


Sapphires are one of the most well loved gemstones. Throughout history they have captivated people with their luminous color that is reminsicent of the deep blue ocean or bright blue sky. However not all sapphires are traditionally blue in color.Together with rubies and emeralds, sapphires have a permanent place in gemstone folklore.  Participants will learn about the many different properties that make up this fascinating gemstone. This September seminar will be presented by Mr. Dino DeGhionno - Senior Manager, Identification Services from GIA Gem Laboratory.

About the speaker:

Dino DeGhionno started his career with the GIA in 1978 in Santa Monica as an instructor in the on-campus Colored Stone / Gem Identification programme. In time he became the manager of the programme. After 14 years in education he moved to the Identification Department of the Laboratory, specializing in the identification of wide range of gem materials, coloured diamonds, and related treatments. During his 40 years at GIA, he has had the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the greats in gemology.

Also involved in research, Dino has co-authored articles in scientific and gemological journals and has lectured on gemological topics in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Dino currently holds the position of Senior Manager of the Identification Department in the Carlsbad lab. He is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of client stones through the department. He also acts as a mentor to the other gemologists and is essential in training new gemological professionals.
