Seth Carlson

CYNTHIA LUI

Seth is a goldsmith and silversmith from the United States. He decided at an early age that he wanted to be a jeweller while working in his father’s stained glass studio and used scraps of discarded materials and wire to fashion jewellery.

While attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), he acquired a love of forming metal into vessels and functional objects. This, in turn, became the foundation of his thesis regarding human interactions and the objects that mediate them, which earned him a BFA in Metals and Jewelry in 2007.

He has worked for several designers in the United States, including Barbara Heinrich Studio in Rochester, New York, and has contributed to internationally award-winning designs as a studio goldsmith. While working as a goldsmith, Seth maintained a studio residency at the Rochester Institute of Technology and launched his own business, Seth Michael Studio, which he continues to dedicate his time to creating limited edition and one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces in silver, gold, and precious gemstones. He travels across the United States to showcase and sell his work at trade shows and exhibitions, and is a member of the American Craft Council as well as the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Seth also holds a Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with his wife Rosa and their three cats, all of whom continue to inspire his work. Seth has always believed that being a craftsperson and being altruistic are synonymous, and therefore considers giving back to the community an essential part of mastering a craft. He is passionate about wildlife conservation, a theme that is consistently featured throughout his works in addition to movement and symbiosis.
